M12 connectors are generally divided into different “codings” which, apart from preventing mis-mating, tend to be specific to different applications. They can be categorised as follows:

• A-code – for actuators and sensors
• B-code – for PROFIBUS field buses
• C-code – for ac power
• D-code – for industrial ethernet (100 MB Ethernet/IP 4-pin)
• S/T code – for power
• X-code—10 gigabit ethernet
